In June 2019, the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls released its Final Report titled Reclaiming Power and Place. The report documented 231 ?Calls for Justice? demanding immediate action against racialized, sexualized and gender-based violence. The report condemned Canadian society for its inaction and described the violence as ?a national tragedy of epic proportion.? It has been eight years since the release of Forever Loved: Exposing the Hidden Crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls in Canada (2016) and four years since the release of Reclaiming Power and Place and we continue to witness racialized, sexualized and gender-based violences across Turtle Island. This book contributes to these Calls for Justice by demanding accountability and policy change. The book centres the voices of Indigenous women, families and communities by offering essays, testimonies, and reflections that honour collective calls to rematriate justice for our Indigenous sisters.

The Pain Mothers Must Never Expose
Confronting the Silences of Maternal Life
Price:
CA$39.95
ISBN: 9781772585025
Pub Date: July 2024
Imprint: Demeter Press
In this collection, contributors reject the narrative that suggests that the pain of mothers must never be exposed. They allow their pain to wander outside the frame of the requisite pathos; individual pieces reveal pain to be a complex and intersectional practice that encompasses denial and disenfranchisement where pain is birthed and named; disorientation leading to a search for stable ground; destabilization that inspires non-normative mothering; and discovery as an active stance that transforms intergenerational pain. As contributors take up the challenge of unravelling their stories, they reach for a life-sustaining and hopeful shift in consciousness that allows them to listen to what pain has to offer without judgment; to imagine and create a different future for themselves, their children, and the world; and to let go of maternal pain and suffering as a way of being. Readers will be inspired by raw honesty, authenticity, and willingness to embrace story...

My Kind of Crazy
A Graphic Memoir
Price:
CA$39.95
ISBN: 9781772584509
Pub Date: August 2023
Imprint: Demeter Press
This graphic memoir looks at intergenerational experiences of domestic and gender-based violence through a maternal gaze. The book?s 13 chapters document a mother?s attempts to reconcile violent incidents through visual representation, psychically reordering them in the context of her changing temporal body. The unexpected return of trauma memories captured in mixed media reveals an intricate balance between remembering and forgetting. Snippets of memory collide on the page, illustrating in bold graphics and fragmented text how maternal bodies react to claim or reject the stories memory brings. At question is how violence interacts with mental health, addiction, disability, gender, and language, and where or if accountability for transgressions exists except in the author?s mind. While pushing the boundaries of ethical storytelling, this research-creation text explores trauma memory in a textured overlay of images and text. The textured hand-made paper cradles a constant search for identity, opening up the body surgically and...

Coming into Being
Mothers on Finding and Realizing Feminism
Price:
CA$44.95
ISBN: 9781772584493
Pub Date: July 2023
Imprint: Demeter Press
This collection explores how becoming and being a mother can be shaped by, and interconnected with, how mothers realize feminism and/or become feminists. Experiences of motherhood can involve unique discriminations and oppressions, as well as new challenges and possibilities. What may have been overlooked, tolerated, or perhaps even gone unnoticed before becoming a mother, can become overtly apparent or even unavoidable afterwards. Becoming a mother may also lead to a questioning of current feminist priorities and practices, and a recognition of the need for, or even demand for, a mother-centred mode of feminism. This anthology, separated into three sections ? ?Losing and Finding,? ?Challenging and Critiquing,? and, ?Connecting and Conversing? ? provides intersectionally sensitive and broad-ranging interdisciplinary insights into mothers? perceptions of, connection to, and realizations of, feminism. International contributors examine this complex topic through a wide variety of texts including personal and scholarly essays, creative non-fiction, letters and Q...
Are the Kids Alright?
The Impact of the Pandemic on Children and Their Families
Price:
CA$39.95
ISBN: 9781772584486
Pub Date: June 2023
Imprint: Demeter Press
During the pandemic, the focus has been on how education and social interaction with peers were integral to children?s functioning. However, very little regard was given to another very important question- how do our children feel about the pandemic and how do they process this experience? Why is it assumed that cognitive functioning and social interaction are the most significant areas of child development? What emotional factors are at play? Are the children alright? How are their families coping and does this have an impact on the children? What I hope to achieve by compiling this edited collection is to bring awareness to the child?s perspective, within the family unit, in addition to addressing other contributing factors that had an impact on their coping mechanisms. This collection will hopefully inform whether the choices, that were made and should be made related to children, have been sound ones and perhaps should...
Normative Motherhood:
Regulations, Representations, and Reclamations
Price:
CA$39.95
ISBN: 9781772584479
Pub Date: May 2023
Imprint: Demeter Press
A central aim of motherhood studies is to examine and theorize normative motherhood. Where does it come from? What are its defining features and demands? How does it work as a regulatory discourse and practice across differences of age, class, race, ability, sexuality, and region? What is the impact of normative motherhood on women?s lives? What does an intersectional analysis of normative motherhood reveal? How is normative motherhood reflected and enacted in public policy, workplace practices, family arrangements and so on? How is normative motherhood represented and resisted in literature, art, photography, and film? How do or may women resist normative motherhood? This collection explores these questions of normative motherhood under three interrelated topics: Regulations, Representations, and Reclamations.

ISBN: 9781772584257
Pub Date: February 2023
Imprint: Demeter Press
Repeat mothers are assumed to know what to expect during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Unexpected: A Postpartum Memoir is the moving, raw account of a second-time mother who finds herself struggling for the first time with postpartum depression, anxiety and motherhood itself. Only as a mother of two does Emily find herself unable to ignore the impossible tempo of motherhood. At eight-months postpartum, Emily finds motherhood to be punctuated with unexpected sensations of irritability and feelings of rage all lathered in immobilizing guilt and shame. Readers witness the author?s personal evolution through her internal review and deconstruction of self and her examination of maternal expectations. It is through this journey of examining and feeling that truly opens up the unexpected possibilities of understanding and what it means to be content in motherhood.
